Malaysia Goodson fell down the stairs while carrying her 1-year-old daughter Rylee in a stroller on January 28, said the New York City Police.
Police said Goodson was found unconscious next to a tipped-over stroller. Rylee was found unharmed.
An autopsy found that the young mother suffered from cardiac arrhythmia, complicating hyperthyroidism, along with cardiac hypertrophy.
The cause of death was listed as natural, the office said.
Following her fall, an outpouring of protests and lawsuits called for the MTA to install elevators at all subway stations.
According to data, only a quarter of the city’s 472 subway stations have elevators. The problem is said to make it difficult for people in wheelchairs to use the subway.
Even New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio took to Twitter to emphasize the problem: “The subway system is not accessible for everyone, and that’s an environment the MTA should not allow."
Two lawsuits against the MTA are still moving forward regarding the lack of elevators, working or not.
